On June 23, 2007, Erica and I took a 1-hour trip to a miniature Dachshund breeder in Eastern Ohio to look at puppies. We were first shown all of the adults and then we were shown two litters of palm-sized puppies. Then we were shown some older puppies. Ultimately, we decided to get an older puppy since they were partially trained and would be easier for us to take care of. We were in decision over two long haired males; Derek, a black/tan 6-month old, and Taylor, a red 5-month old. We were split in our decision: I wanted Taylor and Erica wanted Derek. In the end we chose Derek because he was accustomed to being by himself in his "place," which was important since we both work all day.
We called the breeder the following day with our decision and I picked him up 6 days later. During this time Derek learned how to walk on a leash. The trip home was quiet and he did quite well until we picked Erica from work, where he vomitted in his travel crate. He still gets car sick, but we are confident he will overcome that as he seems to quite enjoy car rides. We have renamed him to Freddy (AKC Registered Name: Ready McFreddy) because of Erica's tendency of saying "Ready Freddy?"
Freddy was born on December 15, 2006. He has champion bloodlines. He is very calm, well-behaved, and brightens up our day. He was initially startled by buses, cars, people, doors slamming, etc. He now enjoys walking in the park, meeting people, playing with dogs, and picking up sticks. We plan on taking him to classes for obedience and agility training. Look out for him at the weiner dog races! You are welcome to view photos and videos of Freddy below. Enjoy him as much as we do!
